awareness about open source
§ 01 · what it was
The story.
Awareness About Open Source was an introductory session for the people in the club, a chance to recentre around what community and digital commons actually mean. It also laid out, from our side, how we plan to work towards them from here on.
It began with the basics: what open source is, what open source advocacy is, what digital commons are, and why anyone should care about either. From there it asked why a community is worth more than a club, and how we want to build one. The short version is to serve no master and build freely.
Then it got to the part that shapes everything else, our principles and objectives. For the people, of the people, from the people. Why we believe in open data, which means keeping everything public and visible, on the record, on the forum and the website. And the first ask of everyone: make an account on fossunited.org and join the Telegram group.
It closed with how the club will work. Five pillars build the rapport of the community: events, project bootcamps, discussions and the Open Community Chintans, content and personal growth, and a fifth that runs through all of them, doing everything with these values in mind. The functioning plan for the club itself rests on four pillars.
- open source
- digital commons
- community
- online
- orientation
